    About

KJ ARTS is the studio name of a painter working with color, gesture and memory — pictures that begin with something observed and end somewhere between the seen and the felt.

Close-up of thick terracotta and black brushstrokes on an ivory ground.
    Detail — Gesture No. 7
Close-up of layered, scraped paint in charcoal, terracotta and ivory with a pale circle.
    Detail — Fragments III

    Approach

Each painting is built slowly, in layers: a loose drawing in thin color, then broader planes, then the marks that decide everything. Color does the structural work, and the surface is left to show how it was made.

    Interests

    • Color as structure
    • The still life as a quiet stage
    • Landscape remembered rather than recorded
    • The figure, simplified to light and posture
    • Surface, texture and the trace of the hand

    Mediums

    • Oil on canvas and linen
    • Acrylic
    • Mixed media on panel
